Silver Eye 2006 : These ten images of the worker in contemporary China portray the difficulty, the diligence, the honor and the beauty of manual labor. The artist recalls the works of French painter Jean-Francois Millet who honored the worker in The Sower (1850) and The Gleaners (1857) as heroic figures worthy of our reflective gaze. In much the same way, this photographer gazed upon the burdensome and honorable manual labor that takes place every day in 21-century China. Much is written today about the global economy and the unprecedented pace of change in China, now that the Chinese leaders have embraced capitalism and committed to modernize their country and open it to global trade. Dramatic changes are evident in the cities – skyscrapers in Beijing, more cars than the roads can accommodate, industry creating high levels of smog, new highways, massive ports like Shanghai, and preparations for the Olympic Games in 2008. However, China with its population of 1.2 billion and its recent history of oppression and Communism, cannot change overnight. Manual labor, historically cheap and a more economical choice than much capital investment in modern methods, still rules the rural areas and much industry. A visit to China today gives a poignant look at the paradox between globalization and the modernization on the one hand, and manual labor in the way work was done 150 years ago in the Western world.
